What is CHP?
CHP stands for Challenging Horizons Program. The CHP is an award-winning approach to helping students with learning or behavior problems improve their academics, citizenship, and personal health. The CHP behavior support system provides a safe learning environment. Research-tested tutoring and enrichment activities engage students in productive learning. The CHP is usually provided as an after-school or summer program.

For a thorough description of the CHP and a summary of the research supporting its efficacy, please visit our research page.

What is YEP?
YEP stands for the Marlboro County Youth Empowerment Program. The YEP is a version of the CHP that has been adopted and adapted by individuals in and around rural Marlboro County. The focus of the YEP is on improving academics, promoting health, assisting with career development, and engaging students in positive community activities.

My school isn't listed. Can we get CHP at our school?
If you are interested in partnering with the CHP, you should contact chp.usc@gmail.com and we will discuss with you the many options for collaborating with the CHP to develop new programs.

CHP is offered at my school! Can my son/daughter/student participate in CHP?
If your child attends a school where there is an existing program, we may be able to enroll your child or put them on a short wait list.  Please use the contact information listed for your school to request more information.

How much does it cost to participate in CHP?
Almost all CHP services are provided at no cost to families. This is possible through 21st Century Community Learning Center Grants, Supplemental Education Services, and other grants and awards. In some cases, parents may pay a fee for students to participate in a CHP program, but pay-for-service programs are only available at the after-school program at Irmo Middle School and the TLC Transition for Success Program at Dent Middle School.

Can I be a CHP staff member?
Most of the staff in the CHP are service-learning students, either in high school or higher education. Most of the paid staff in the CHP or YEP have either served as a student or volunteer prior to being hired. Please contact a program coordinator to learn about volunteer opportunities at specific sites.

There are several classes at the University of South Carolina that give course credit for serving in the CHP. Please check the page for USC students for more information here.

If you are not a USC student and want to get involved, please contact Dr. Smith and he will work with you to explore volunteer or service-learning opportunities for your school.
