Challenging Horizons Program - Irmo Middle School

The CHP at Irmo Middle School operates Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 6:00pm. The program includes structured homework/study time, additional math instruction, the Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) reading program, the Writing and Reading Achievement Program (WRAP), Self-Efficacy Enhancing Coaching (SEC), and enrichment in the form of self-reflective health journals and daily recreation.

There are 30 free scholarship slots available in the program funded by a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant. Due to parent interest and request for after-school tutoring services students, additional students may pay to attend the program. As a means to sustain high quality programming with a low staff-to-student ratio, there is a $50 per week fee associated with non-scholarship students who attend the program.

Imro Middle School is in Lexington Richland School District 5 (LRSD5).   We have worked with this school district for the past six years and LRSD5 is one of our strongest community partnerships. The CHP at Irmo Middle is part of a continuum of care we are developing within LRSD5.  For instance, students who are enrolled in the CHP at Leaphart Elementary School are recruited to attend the CHP at Irmo Middle School.  This means that some fortunate students are offered free CHP after-school services from 3rd grade to 8th grade. We are looking to expand this age range and number of schools involved with the CHP in LRSD5.
