CHP receives an Afterschool Innovation Award

The Challenging Horizons Program has been awarded an Afterschool Innovation Award from the MetLife Foundation and the Afterschool Alliance.

From the news release:

MetLife Foundation and the Afterschool Alliance today honored The Challenging Horizons Program (CHP) with an Afterschool Innovator Award in recognition of the program’s success mentoring students who are transitioning from elementary to middle school and to middle school students who are receiving supplemental education.  MetLife Managing Director Kenneth Thurmond and Agency Marketing Director Gregory Bishop presented the Award at an open house that was part of Lights On Afterschool, the only nationwide rally for afterschool programs.  CHP also received $5,000 to sustain its work.

The CHP is a comprehensive, multi-modal approach to helping youth who are falling behind academically.  A decade ago, the CHP started as a small afterschool program for youth with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  It has evolved to meet the needs of a broad range of students who are falling behind academically.  Most of the students are served in afterschool and summer programs staffed primarily by service-learning students from the University of South Carolina.  The CHP is currently funded by five 21st Century Community Learning Center grants for afterschool programs.

CHP wins award from the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee

The CHP is excited to announce that we were the sole recipient of the 2009 South Carolina Literacy Champions Award.

From the SC Education Oversight Committee:

The SC Education Oversight Committee created the South Carolina Literacy Champions Award to recognize successful service-learning programs within postsecondary institutions focused on
building reading skills among SC public school students in grades K-12.

The annual award recognizes up to three service learning programs within SC postsecondary institutions that have had a significant impact on increasing literacy among K-12 public school students. Each award will be acknowledged with a $10,000 grant to be used for expanding the awarded program, and recognition at a meeting of the EOC.

We envision that the majority of funds from this award will greatly benefit literacy efforts at the CHP after-school programs funded by 21st Century Community Learning Center grants.

Thanks are especially due to Jason Bird and Mr. Richard Dixon who took the lead on applying for this award.
