What is CHP?
The Challenging Horizons Program (CHP) is a comprehensive, multi-modal approach to helping youth who are falling behind academically. A decade ago, the CHP started as a small after-school program for youth with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (i.e., less than a dozen per school). The CHP has evolved into a variety of service delivery models that meet the needs of a broad range of students; however, the primary focus on the CHP in South Carolina has been on after-school and summer programs staffed primarily by University service-learning students.
Several studies supporting the efficacy of the CHP
policies and procedures have been published in
peer-reviewed journals. Two national organizations have
recognized the CHP for being an innovative approach.
The CHP is under review for the National Registry of
Evidence Based Programs and Practices (US Dept of Health
and Human Services) and the Doing What Works website (US
Dept of Education). More detailed descriptions of the
CHP can be found here, and in publications posted on our
Research page.
What are the benefits of participating as a staff member of CHP?
Working in the CHP as a service-learning experience provides essential experience pertinent to graduate school and helps to deepen student’s understanding of course material.
Is participation limited to students majoring in specific disciplines?
No, students from all disciplines are invited to contribute to the CHP.
How do I get involved?
There are several ways you can get involved:
- • Enroll in Psychology 489 “the Community Psychology Practicum” and earn 3 course credits while working two afternoons a week.
- • Enroll in a service learning class affiliated with the CHP. Previous classes have included University 101, EDTE 400, Psychology 430 (Social Psychology), 487 (Community Psychology), and 526 (Exceptional Children). Ask your instructor if you can get involved.
- • Serve as a volunteer staff member or mentor in the CHP.
- • Enroll in an independent study class with Dr. Smith.
